Here is a work around that removes the crackle:
Select Options> Preferences> Audio Device> Advanced> increase the buffer size to 1024
Click Refresh> OK> Apply> OK, play the file.
In our tests, this results in no crackle when playing the audio event, and no crackle when adjusting levels in the Mixing console.
