Why is Optics grayed out in the Photoshop Filter menu?

Optics may appear grayed out in the Photoshop Filter menu if the image is not in a supported color mode. Optics requires the image to be in RGB color space to be enabled.

Cause of Optics being disabled in Photoshop

Optics in Photoshop only works with RGB images.

This issue occurs when:

  • The image is in a non-RGB color mode (such as CMYK, Grayscale, or Indexed Color)

  • Photoshop disables filters that require RGB input

As a result, Optics cannot be selected from the Filter menu.

How to enable Optics in Photoshop

Optics users in Photoshop can resolve this by converting the image to RGB.

Steps:

  • Go to Image > Mode

  • Select RGB Color

Result after converting to RGB in Photoshop

After converting the image:

  • Optics becomes available in the Filter menu

  • Filters can be applied normally

  • Full Optics functionality is restored

Ensuring the image is in RGB color mode allows Optics to run correctly in Photoshop.
