Why do alpha channels with soft edges appear smaller in Premiere Pro when using the Silhouette plug-in?

Silhouette alpha channels may appear smaller or tighter in Adobe Premiere Pro when using soft edges. This happens because Premiere Pro applies additional linearization to alpha channels that are already linear when exported from the Silhouette plug-in.

Cause of alpha channel shrinkage in Silhouette workflows

Silhouette plug-in alpha output is already in linear color space. However, Premiere Pro applies its “Composite in Linear Color” setting by default, which re-linearizes the alpha channel.

This results in:

  • Alpha edges appearing smaller or tighter

  • Soft edges becoming more compressed

  • Visual mismatch between Silhouette output and Premiere Pro display

How to fix alpha channel issues in Premiere Pro

To prevent Premiere Pro from altering Silhouette alpha channels, disable linear compositing in the sequence settings.

Steps:

  • Open Sequence Settings in Premiere Pro

  • Disable Composite in Linear Color

Disabling this setting ensures that Silhouette alpha channels display correctly, preserving the intended soft edge appearance.
